Lake Ballinger is just too cool.  How great would it be to live on the shores? Or what about Edmount Island?

We recommend the Wikipedia article on the lake and the island (links below). The history is fascinating. Here are some tidbits.

Lake Ballinger is a natural lake formed by the melting of the Puget Sound lobe of the Cordillean ice sheet. It used to be called McAleer Lake after logger Hugh McAleer and was renamed in 1901 when purchased by Richard Ballinger.

The island is called Edmount Island and was actually homesteaded in 1862 by Julia and Ira Bartholomew. The US Government had to re-survey the land because it didn't exist in records, only the lake.  The island is actually three acres and was once connected by a bridge to the western shore.  A fire in 2009 from a barbecue ignited the island, a firefighter was hurt and the peat, which is what the island is mostly made of, smouldered for days.  It is now no longer open to the public.  This is why we can't have nice things.
