In Puget Sound, we are lucky to have both Transient and Resident killer whales, or orcas. The Southern Residents typically live in inland or nearby coastal waters and survive primarily off of Chinook salmon, which makes up about 90% of their diet. The Transient or Bigg's killer whales are mammal hunters and prey on seals, porpoises, sea lions, dolphins, and even other types of whales. Transients can be found along the shores of Alaska, British Columbia, and even as far south as Southern California. Fortunately for us, they also spend quite a bit of time in the Salish Sea.
